Warren E. Hathaway

(1931 - 2023)

Warren Elkanah Hathaway, age 92, passed into the presence of his Lord and savior Jesus Christ August 3, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Born March 21, 1931 in Warroad, Minnesota to Ralph and Ivy Hathaway the family emigrated to Canada in 1936 to farm near Colinton, AB. Soon after graduating Athabasca High School, Warren joined the United States Marine Corps and began a career in electronics working on radar systems. In 1962 he returned to Alberta to marry Lois McCutcheon.

Warren emigrated a second time to Alberta (this time for good) in 1966 enrolling at the University of Alberta to become a teacher. Eight years later he completed his education studies with a Ph.D. His teaching career started in 1969 with Edmonton Public Schools and ended in 1991, having spent 14 years with Alberta Education.

In retirement Warren focused on his calling—educator—through mentoring young students, helping newcomers to Canada, and his ‘labor of love’ teaching the gospel in discipleship schools in northern Alberta and the N.W.T., which led to Warren becoming an ordained Pastor. Warren was active in several Edmonton area organizations including: Gideons International, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Friends of Malawi Fellowship.

Warren was a prolific writer. During his career he published articles in academic journals and a book: Education & Technology: At the Crossroads. In his retirement he wrote books telling the stories of fascinating people he met such as Vera Dowling, Pursuit of a Dream, a celebrated Canadian aviation pioneer; and things he believed, such as Then Came Sunday. For family and friends, he combined his hobbies of photography and cooking and produced a treasured cookbook of favorite family recipes.

Warren is survived by his wife Lois Hathaway (nee McCutcheon); two sons: Rus (Holly Henson) Hathaway and David (Kimberly) Hathaway; numerous grandchildren including (but not limited to) Joshua, Daniel, Holly, Ella, Jack, Hopestill, Asher; three great-grandchildren; and his sister Ila Foster.

Over the years many individuals have felt Warren’s affirmations and have asked to adopt him as ‘grandpa’. He never turned away someone that needed a ‘grandpa’. Warren had a special tenderness for his daughter-in-law Bobbi-Del Hathaway (nee Milligan) who persistently brought him joy until her untimely passing in 2021.
