Ardith Lucy Haub
August 8, 1938 - October 20, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Ardith Lucy Haub. She passed peacefully at the age of 82 years on October 20, 2020, at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre.
Ardith Lucy Haub was born August 8, 1938, in Vermilion Alberta to Walter and Izola Peters. She lived in Allandale near Clandonald Alberta, and attended the small Allendale school for grades 1 to 3 until she was 9, and the family moved in 1947 to farm in the Athabasca area.
Ardith was Walter and Izola’s first child, and she grew up with sister Maureen in the Fairhaven District north of the Athabasca River. Growing up on a farm meant it was necessary to help her parents with farm and gardening work, but she had many happy memories of time spent riding horses with her sister Maureen, picking berries in the summer, and visiting family who lived close by. Mom and sister Maureen loved to play guitar and sing, and the sisters were recognized with first or second-place awards in the talent shows they entered.
She graduated from Edwin Parr Composite School in June 1957, and on November 22 of the same year married William David Haub--always referred to as Billy.
Mom started living her married life in a 3 room log home built by Billy’s father John (Jack) Haub decades earlier. It didn’t have running water or electricity, and was heated with a wood and coal stove. Their four children; Brenda, David, Rodney and Grant were born while the family lived there. They built a new house in the same yard in 1967. Mom loved living and creating her life on that property, and it was to be her home for 62 years.
Mom always had a large garden, and she worked hand in hand with Billy in all aspects of their expanding farming business. She knew how to run farm equipment and acted as a veterinarian’s assistant in the cold hours of February mornings when calving season was underway.
In 1974 she started a rewarding job at Blunt’s Nursing Home (now Extendicare) and worked as a Practical Nurse until 1987.
At that time Haub Simmentals, Mom and Dad’s business of raising purebred Simmental cattle became her full time job. They were respected professional cattle breeders, and Mom was instrumental in forming an organization called NAPCA— Northern Alberta Purebred Cattle Association.
Mom’s nature was to be warm, engaging and personal. She had many friends, and her heart and house were always welcoming to those that entered.
Mom’s greatest joy was to share simple and special occasions with her family. These occasions were always marked with laughter and an abundance of food and frequently bluegrass music playing in the background.
Ardith was predeceased by beloved husband William David Haub (Billy) on December 30, 2005.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, 9 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
Her children are Brenda (Gary Silkie), David Haub (Mary Vanderwal), Rodney Haub (Cathy), and Grant (Sherry-Ann).
Her grandchildren are Tanya (Jeff Smyth), Melanie (Wayne Mohid), Tyler (Catherine), Dustin (Santana), Krista (Cody Rodriguez), Kaitlyn (Jon Ball), Keri-Ann (Ian Babiak), Cameron (Kaitlyn Lush) and Kayla (Jordan Chrunyk).
Her great grandchildren are Skye, Marcus, Myka, Kyler, Kaeden, Keltyn, Cruse,Kaius and Owen.
