Jason McRury

Jason McRury of Athabasca, beloved father, son, friend and uncle, passed away suddenly at home on December 12, 2019, at home at the age of 40.

Jason was born September 27, 1979, at New Waterford, Nova Scotia and lived there with his father Neil and mother Elaine where they lived there shortly before they made the trek out west. Jason went to school in Millet for his elementary years where he and his three brothers called home until they permanently settled in the town of Athabasca. Enrolled in Edwin Parr Composite School in Grade 8 at the age of 13 Jason graduated in 1997. Soon after his graduation, Jason went to work for Miller Western in Boyle where he later decided to pursue his career in becoming a Millwright where he studied at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Climbing up the professional ladder, Jason became a successful employee at Cenovus where he was a Mechanical Lead, a profession that he was proud of. Throughout his life in Athabasca Jason became a prominent member of the community through his volunteer work at the Athabasca Fire Department where he worked alongside voluminous other outstanding members of the community and fostered many life-lasting friendships along with the way. He took pride in his work and found his sense of fulfillment in supporting and providing, but when he was at home, Jason enjoyed being with those who mattered the most; his family. Jason enjoyed spending time with his only daughter Zander, and his two sons Brogan and Onyx. When he could, he would bring them to Nana and Papas (Elaine and Greg) farm where the kids would run wild and he would be able to visit with his brothers Brad, Adam, and Rory. Other than sitting in his favorite chair, Jason enjoyed hunting with his brothers and his dad Neil, fishing trips with Greg and Rory, sitting around the fire with family and being at his children’s sports events.

Jason is survived by the mother of his children Angeline, his only daughter Zander, his eldest son Brogan and his youngest son Onyx, his three brothers Adam, Brad and Rory, and his step-brother Devin, and his parents Elaine and Greg, Neil and Debbie, as well as his nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, December 20, 2019, at the Athabasca Missionary Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jason’s memory to the Athabasca or Colinton Volunteer Fire Department or for those who wish, contributions can be made towards the future educational and recreational fund of Jason’s children Zander, Brogan, and Onyx at https://www.gofundme.com/f/zander-brogan-and-onyx-in-memory-of-jason-mcrury
