EDNA KLEINFELDT

February 28, 1931 - October 18, 2022

Edna Elsa Kleinfeldt was born in Kowalowka, Poland and was the eldest child of August and Olga Dams. Edna began school in Poland, staying with her maternal grandmother because she lived closer to the school. In 1939, when Edna was 8 years old, the family immigrated to Canada, following her uncle and his family to the Barrhead area. The two families lived and farmed together on a quarter of land until 1942 when her family moved 6 miles south of Barrhead and started homesteading. Edna helped her father clear brush and stumps with the horses to clear the land for farming. She was much happier working outside rather than doing inside chores, something which carried through her whole life. Edna did not finish high school, but went to work as a nursing aid, working only during the winter months –in the summer she was needed at home, working the land. Edna really wanted to be a nurse, but money was needed to keep the farm running and could not be spared for her education.

Edna met Albert in 1950 and they married two years later, farming in the Manola area. They had two children promptly, Darlene and Ron. Edna and Albert had a mixed farm with cattle, grain, chickens, turkeys and geese. Edna always had a big garden along with many flowers. She was involved for many years with the Manola Community Club and was a fabulous cook. The family especially enjoyed her pies and Saskatoon/blueberry perogies. In 1982, Edna and Albert retired from the farm and moved into Barrhead. Edna continued to stay busy, babysitting for a few years, joining a bowling league, gardening, and planting a second garden at the farm since some things grew better there.

Edna was quiet and unassuming, and loved to work. She enjoyed fishing, picking berries and taking care of animals. She was youthful, lively and energetic and loved to be involved with her seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Edna would still get down on the floor and play with her great-grandchildren as a 90-year-old. The children loved to play and interact with her.

Edna was able to live in her own home and still had a garden along with many flowers this summer. She was also able to meet her newest grandchild who was born two weeks prior to her passing.

Edna is survived by her two children: Darlene (Tony) Klassen, and Ron (Chris) Kleinfeldt; grandchildren, Tara (Trevor) Dowhaniuk, Camille Klassen, Kent (Jamie) Klassen, Jenny (Trevor) Pasanen, Sheri (Reuben) Kleinfeldt/Ross, Kurt (Sasha) Kleinfeldt, David Kleinfeldt, and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service was held on Monday October 31, 2022 at 11:00 AM from Barrhead Alliance Church.

Donations in memory of Edna Kleinfeldt can be made to the Manola Cemetery, or charity of one’s choice.
