MARTIN, Caroline "Liz"

God looked around his garden- And found an empty place,

He then looked down upon the earth- And saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you -And lifted you to rest.

God’s garden must be beautiful -He always takes the best.

He saw the road was getting rough – And the hills were hard to climb.

So he closed your weary eyelids – And whispered, ‘Peace be thine’.

It broke our hearts to lose you – But you didn’t go alone,

For part of us went with you – The day God called you home

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family announces the passing of Caroline “Liz” Martin, formerly of Cherhill, Alberta, on January 11, 2021.

She will be dearly missed, yet will forever remain in the hearts and memories of her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, great grandson and many nieces, nephews, family, friends and neighbours.

Liz was born and lived in the Cherhill area the majority of her life. Her parents moved from New York to Cherhill, where they farmed, kept bees, and her dad was a carpenter. She was the youngest child in the family, and had 2 older brothers and 7 older sisters.

Liz attended Coyote School, Cherhill School, and later Sangudo High School. She had many stories from her school days, especially of her adventures walking to Coyote School. Liz enjoyed school very much and had many childhood friends, many of which she kept in touch with over the years.

She married, raised her family, and farmed until retirement. She enjoyed her cattle and her pets. She loved nature, and enjoyed farming, gardening, picking berries, bird watching, yard work and her flowers.

Liz was very business minded, and a very hard worker. She worked in the field, milked cows, did chores, yard work, housework, cooked, and raised her children. Whether you were a family member, friend, or a hired hand, she would subtly discover what your favourite meal was and prepare it for you.

She was very active in the Cherhill Community, her Church, and the George Pegg Garden. She was also involved in both the Cherhill School and the Cherhill 4-H Club.  She belonged to the Sangudo and District History Society, and assisted with the writing and preparation of the Lantern Era History Book. She helped cater weddings, and was involved with many other community functions over the years, such as helping plan the Cherhill Community Christmas Concerts, in which she often wrote and acted in the plays and skits that were performed.

Liz was outgoing and always willing to help someone out in need. She was a good neighbour and friend. She was there for you during the good times and the bad, and you knew that you could always count on her for support. She made many close and dear friends throughout the years.

As busy as she was, Liz always made time for her hobbies. She loved baking, cooking, sewing, cake decorating, carpentry, geography, history, languages, writing, poetry, reading, drawing, puzzles, and crosswords. She learned calligraphy and Texas Hold’em in her later years, and enjoyed both very much. She loved playing many board games such as Pictionary, Cranium, Charades, Trivial Pursuit, Scattegories, as well as many card games. She enjoyed watching movies, especially a good comedy. The Royal Family was always a great interest of hers, and she followed their lives for many years. She loved listening to a variety of music, dancing, singing, whistling, and played the harmonica, guitar and accordion. She enjoyed cross country skiing, skating, snowmobiling, riding the quad, playing baseball, badminton, horseshoes, mini-golf, and table tennis. She loved watching curling, figure skating, gymnastics, football and especially the Olympic Games.

Liz loved travelling within Alberta, to various parts of Saskatchewan and British Columbia, including the Okanagan, the Vancouver area, Victoria, Sooke, and to Montana and Washington, to visit family and friends, and her siblings and their families, all of whom were very dear to her. She thoroughly enjoyed when family and friends visited her on the farm as well, and always had a lot of company.

Liz gave everything to her family, and loved them dearly. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. She enjoyed visiting with all of her family, and especially cherished the precious moments spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandson.

Liz lived a full and happy life, filled with wonderful friends and family, and many fond and cherished memories. She had a wonderful sense of humour and had a real knack for telling a good story or joke.  Whatever she attempted in life, she gave it her very best, plus that little extra. When life gave her lemons, she made lemon meringue pies.

She will be best remembered for her sense of humour, smile, laugh, wit, practical jokes, facial expressions, storytelling, generosity, imagination, creativity, strength, determination, spunk, energy, and her kind and caring nature.

We thank her for so many rich memories that we will hold close to our hearts, and for her deep love, passion, devotion, advice, and support over the years. We thank her for making every Christmas, birthday, holiday, special occasion, family visit, weekend and average week day so very special.

We love her deeply and will miss her always. It gives us great comfort knowing that she will be in a better place and that we will meet again someday.

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,

Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;

Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

The family would like to deeply thank the physicians, nursing staff, and all other staff at the Chateau Lac St. Anne, Shepherds Care, the Barrhead Health Care Centre, Keir Care, and the Barrhead Clinic, for their wonderful care and compassion.

Due to Covid restrictions, a service will not take place at this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Liz’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the Captain Poulson Cemetery, or a charity of your choice.
