POLNY, Helen

1927 - 2021

Helen Polny was born in Poland and came to Canada with her parents at an early age.

She was raised in rural Alberta and left to work in Yellowknife. Helen later moved to Edmonton where she married and raised her family while working as a waitress. She has five children Dennis, Darcy, Dale, David and Cindy followed by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Helen cared for way too many cats and dogs over the years to mention.  Her fondness for country life led her back to the old homestead in Prosperity Alberta. The area never lived up to it’s name and was always a struggled existence. Her strong personality and determined nature gave her the strength to maintain three quarter sections of farmland.  Her need for adventure led her from restaurant owner, diamond exploration to winning thouroughbreds on the race tracks.

As life dealt its hand in her later years she wasn’t able to drive her tractor, but she would often be found smiling on her lawn tractor, cutting grass for hours or working in her garden plots.

Helen is predeceased by her mother, Rosie; father, Stanley; husband, Richard; sister, Stevie; and cousin, Florence (also a flock of chickens she fed outdated canned pickles to).  She is survived by her brother, Edd, his family; as well as relatives in Whitehorse and Poland.

Due to the Covid 19 restrictions a private Funeral Service will be held Thursday, April 1 at 10:00 a.m. with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
