Walter Schmidt

It is with great sadness that the family of Walter Schmidt announce his passing on November 25, 2023 at the age of 87 years. Walter was a passionate cattleman his whole life and now God has called him home to greener pastures.

Walter was born in Newbrook, Alberta and moved to Barrhead at an early age where he spent his life dedicated to his family, community and to building a business. He founded Schmidt Livestock in 1959 and considered himself fortunate to work together with several generations and branches of family as the business grew and expanded over the years.

Walter’s faith and family meant everything to him. He will be forever loved and remembered by Emi, his wife of 65 years, and children: Brad (Michelle) Schmidt, Shelly (Bruce) Pusch and Gary (Lies) Schmidt.

His grandchildren and great grandchildren: Angelique (Kristian) & Lena Sawyshyn, Marguerite Schmidt, Justine (Marcus) & Casey Allen, Hanna (Spencer) & Kade Voight, Matthew & Maison Pusch & Wacey Inglis, Desiree (Mathew) Jake, Emi & Jon Symon, Rebecca (Jordan) Liam & Easton Madarash, Stephanie (Marshall) Wesley, James & Albert Price, Alix (Brandon) Whiting, and Eric Schmidt (Stef Wallach).

His brother Gilbert Schmidt, sister and brother-in-law’s Eleanor & Jim Branden, Brenda & Cal Visser, Eileen & Gary Muri. Along with many other beloved nieces, nephews and close friends.

Walter is predeceased by his parents Albert and Olga Schmidt, grandson Grant Pusch, his brothers, sister and in-laws: Henry & Elsie Schmidt, Alma & Reiny Koberstein, Leonard & Vivian Schmidt, Elsie Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt.

A Funeral service was held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Barrhead.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alberta Cancer Foundation or charity of choice.
