SPILA, John Leon

February 19, 1941 ~ September 8, 2023

It is with immense sorrow that the family of John Leon Spila announce his passing on September 8, 2023 at the age of 82 years.

John was born on February 19, 1941 in Willow Flat, AB to Franciszek and Jozefa Szpila. He was the youngest of 5 children. John grew up on the farm in Willow Flat, AB. He started farming at the early age of 7 years old when his Dad tied him to the tractor so he wouldn’t fall off. John took over the family farm at the age of 17 after his father passed away. John loved the farm and even though he ventured away from the farm for short periods he always found his way back. He resided there until October 2022 when he moved to the Pembina Lodge in Westlock, AB. John was an avid music lover. Chances are you could find him at a local Jam. He hardly ever missed the Zabava program on CFCW. He taught himself to play the fiddle, banjo and accordion. He could probably pick up any instrument and play it by ear. His pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed it when they all gathered around him at the farm for a wiener roast and outdoor movie.

John leaves to mourn his loss his wife Victoria, children Quentin (Paula), Gwen (Bill), Michelle and Jason (Rae-Lynne), grandchildren Walter, Oliver, Sebastian and Darian, sisters Helen Elgert and Veronica Coulter, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. John was predeceased by his parents Franciszek and Jozefa, brother Andrew, sister Petronella, sister-in-law Lillian Spila, brothers-in-law Frank Fus, David Elgert, and Lane Coulter and his in- laws Walter and Kathleen Nalesnik. John’s brother-in-law, Matt Nalesnik passed away shortly after him.

At John’s request there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society.
