BURLEIGH FALLS — Police say the search has ended for two people who went missing over the weekend on an Ontario lake with their bodies being recovered from the water.

Ontario Provincial Police say they responded Sunday to a report of a person going missing from Burleigh Falls, about 30 kilometres northeast of Peterborough.

They say two people had been swimming in the area and one of them fell into the water from the shore and appeared to be in distress.

Police say bystanders jumped into the water to help.

While doing so, police say a second person went missing.

First responders searched the waters Sunday without luck, and the OPP says in a news release Monday afternoon that their Underwater Search and Recovery Unit recovered the bodies of a 24-year-old man from Caledon, Ont., and a 26-year-old man from Brampton, Ont.
