It only took two years, but I'm finally here...Time to take advantage

Well, they always say the third time’s the charm, and now it appears that that old adage rings true in my life. After two previous attempts at getting hired by the Barrhead Leader, I’m finally here.

Well, they always say the third time’s the charm, and now it appears that that old adage rings true in my life.

After two previous attempts at getting hired by the Barrhead Leader, I’m finally here.

It all started in the spring of 2009 when I was wrapping up my fourth and final year of Carleton University’s prestigious Bachelor of Journalism program. I applied anywhere and everywhere, including your fair town.

Alas, it was not to be.

Then, some time in 2010, I tried again. Still nothing.

But now, after several months of trying, here I am. It’s funny how things work sometimes.

Of course, I am sad to leave the Westlock News, where I’ve been for the last nine months. I enjoyed my time there, reporting on the rivalry between the two towns and getting used to the culture out here in rural Alberta.

As a born Torontonian, it certainly is different out here. There are a lot fewer people, but they’re considerably more friendly when you meet them in the streets. However, I haven’t yet decided if that’s a good thing or not, to be honest. I am still used to the anonymity of city life, but I am starting to get the hang of the fact everyone knows who I am.

So, what do I want to bring to Barrhead? Well, eventually, I want to bring my actual physical body. As much as I like my housemates, I know at some point I will have to fully immerse myself in all that Barrhead has to offer and move here.

Plus, the commute, as easy as it is, does take a toll on my car and my pocketbook.

I also want to rekindle my musicianship. From Grade 6 until Grade 13 (well, Victory Lap, ask me about it later), I was a tuba and trombone player. Now, it’s been six years since I played regularly, and I miss it immensely. If anyone is willing to give me the opportunity to play again, I will be more than appreciative.

And curling. I never really had a chance to try it in Westlock because of my schedule. Once again, I want to try it here. And don’t think that just because I’ve seen the Scotties or the Brier on TV that I think it’s easy. I know it’s not, and I know I’m going to fall on my butt a lot, but I want to try this sport for real.

So, yeah. I look forward to this opportunity to continue my career and learn more about the town and county of Barrhead. I would say I won’t be here forever, and you should catch me while you can, but at this point in my life, there are no certainties.

I had no plans to leave Westlock any time soon, and now look at me. One minute I was making plans for a Saskatchewan road trip, and the next I’m the editor of a newspaper.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
