Newly elected MPs need to take steps to turn tide of demographic winter

Dear Editor:

Having just experienced another election, we were again confronted by political candidates making all kinds of promises to get our votes. Better social laws toward economic prosperity seem to carry the most weight in the past campaign. However, few, if any have addressed the upcoming problem of the so called “demographic winter,” which will greatly affect our society. With Canada’s birthrate at 1.6 children per family, a time is soon coming when our young people will not be able to sustain health care and old age pension costs. One only has to look to the European countries where this is already causing problems. And we’re starting to feel it locally as well; the Barrhead Leader recently reported the closure of a local senior high school program due to poor projected enrolment numbers.

Incidentally, this year “The Pill” turns 50. This is not something to celebrate, for it did not cure anything; in fact, it became a first step and abortion quickly followed.

As a result, a giant crack was hammered into the foundation of this nation. One of the most basic and crucial roles of the civil government – the protection of innocent life – was abandoned. Since that catastrophic fault, many other cracks are appearing.

The abortion issue is a crucial one for the future of this country, but it is largely ignored by our politicians. It is the issue of the value of human life. Ultimately, society cannot prosper if it permits its own destruction. We must fight against even the most subtle departures from this basic principle: life is precious, and must be defended.

However, we must also realize that the government officials cannot do it alone. All who are concerned and grieve for the untold number of babies appointed to die before they are born must ask their MPs to change the laws.

Let us try to turn the tide of the demographic winter, where few children are found and loneliness prevails. As anyone visiting a senior’s homes knows, the elderly parents have one thing in common: They treasure their children and grandchildren.

Our response must be to view sexuality as a gift from our Creator in the context of marriage when one man and one woman are committed to each other. Then they will in time become parents who will take their responsibility seriously and love and care for their offspring. Sexuality should never be disconnected from marriage and procreation, and turned into some form of entertainment with the potential of unwanted “side effects”.

Let us all consider our freedom to speak up and thereby encourage our newly elected MPs and prime minister to make laws to protect life in the womb, for the good of this country and all its citizens.
