It’s official. The fireworks have gone off, which means one thing for sure: Summer’s here.
For many of us, the Canada Day long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which runs right through to the Labour Day long weekend.
While many of us complain bitterly that our summer is quite simply too short, as Albertans were have a knack for packing as much activity as possible into that short time frame, making the most of it.
At last weekend’s Canada Day activities throughout the county, we proved our willingness to get out and celebrate with our friends and neighbours.
In town, a modest number of people came out to enjoy the free swimming, face painting, barbecue, and fireworks at night.
In Fawcett, a modest number of people came out to enjoy the activities that community had to offer. In Clyde, Pickardville, and Dapp, the story was the same. Each community was able to boast impressive attendance — for a small community.
Perhaps, it’s time for us to work together on one big shindig for next year to celebrate our one big community.
The only thing better than celebrating something as important to us as the birth of our nation with some close friends and family is celebrating that same thing with throngs of people!
Imagine what kind of celebration we could have next year if all these community groups were to pool their resources into one big parade, one big barbecue, on big festival, one big ball tournament and one big fireworks display! It would certainly make it easier to pack more into our already short summers.
Certainly, the would take a lot of work to organize, but the benefits of having a large-scale festive atmosphere in which to celebrate the birth of our nation would outweigh cost in terms of organizational hours.
To successfully host an event of this magnitude, however, would require the town, the county and the village to work together to steer the ship in the same direction.
There’s no doubt that such a feat would be possible, and what better reason to host a large-scale festival like that than Canada’s birthday?
