For kids in Athabasca, Boyle and the rest of the country, hockey season is here.

Sure, the ice has been in for a while now, and teams have been practicing. But now is the time when the actual games are about to begin. After a summer of indulging other athletic pursuits, youth across the nation are focused once again on what is so often called Canada’s national pastime.

At the same time, the best hockey players in the world are plying their trade once again. Local kids must surely be excited to watch this National Hockey League season, whether they cheer for the Edmonton Oilers or another team altogether.

Canada loves its hockey, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But like all sports, there are inherent risks that come with taking part in it. When local kids hit the ice this fall and winter, here’s hoping they play safe, play smart and have lots of fun.
