After a brief hiatus, the community registration night will make a comeback to Westlock this week, and it’s an event both town and county residents would do well to take advantage of.
With everyone switching gears into back-to-school mode, this evening will provide a valuable way for residents to connect with the organizations and activities in the region that interest them — and very likely some organizations and activities they didn’t realize existed.
This is a good thing. It’s easy to get into a hibernation mode and neglect to seek out the various activities that will help us to preserve our health, our friendships, and even our sanity during the long, cold winter months we have all come to know and love.
On a related note, the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre construction is progressing well, to the point that the different components of the project are taking form. This is great news for the community.
In future years, once the Spirit Centre is complete and ready for the countless community groups that will be able to take advantage of what the facility has to offer, this facility will take a central role.
Certainly it’s essential to replace the once proud but currently aging Jubilee Arena. Anyone who has spent any amount of time there throughout the winter will tell you it takes on the smell of an old hockey bag.
There are no guarantees the new Spirit Centre will be able to avoid that pitfall, but what makes this project really great for the community will be the field house component.
Having this type of facility will truly expand the sporting options in this community. Many indoor sports in town currently rely on the facilities in local schools, which severely limits the list of potential users. Obviously, school groups will get priority in the schools, which sometimes leaves other groups scrambling for space.
Certainly, not everyone will be willing or able to take advantage of this space, but it’s safe to say that anyone interested in any sort of physical activity will at one point or another find their way to the Spirit Centre.
This facility will open the doors to countless new athletic opportunities in this community, and the revival of the community registration night is a good first step in getting people out there.
