Volunteers key

It has been said before, but perhaps it’s impossible to say it too often. We’re fortunate to have such a strong contingent of volunteers and boosters in the Westlock area.

It has been said before, but perhaps it’s impossible to say it too often. We’re fortunate to have such a strong contingent of volunteers and boosters in the Westlock area.

This week’s Westlock News is full of stories about the people who make our region great and the people who get the word out about how great the region is.

Last week, volunteers from the Clyde Haunted House gave up their time, as they have been doing all summer and last summer to boot, to let people in Edmonton and Lamont know about one of the more notable events in the region.

Also, last week dozens of athletes from the area did us proud at the Fairview 55 Plus Summer Games, and many of the volunteers who will work on hosting the 2013 games here traveled up to Fairview to get an idea of how it’s done so we can put on an even better performance. Also on the athletics side of things are two interesting stories of world-class athletics facilities right in the county.

The National Sport Jumping Championship illustrated how the skydiving facilities at the Westlock Airport are second to none, even garnering national television coverage.

Then last week, the Canadians Men’s gymnastics team hosted a training camp at the Tawatinaw Gymnastics facility, which offers everything these world-class athletes needed to hone their skills in advance of international tournaments this month.

In terms of public service, continues.

Last but not least is the work of the Westlock Volunteer Fire Department in containing the blaze that destroyed a house in the downtown area last week. While many of us were still asleep, these individuals volunteered their time to get out of bed, put on pounds of gear and fight a fire — at no small risk to themselves.

When we bear in mind that our community has only about 13,000 people in it, to have such world-class facilities — and world-class people — is something that should be not just acknowledged, but celebrated at every opportunity.
