2022 Snowbird Update

Many Albertan RV snowbirds who were stuck shovelling snow for two winters in a row are now getting ready to plan their 2022 return to the winter warmth down south. A few things have changed, including COVID-19 border restrictions and your favourite destinations.

Border crossing rules change often

While the land border to the United States opened up again on November 8, 2021, the rules around vaccinations requirements, entry into the US, and re-entry into Canada may change depending on current health recommendations.

In order to stay up to date with everything you need to know, check the Canadian and/or American government websites so you know what to expect. In order to re-enter Canada, you will need to download the ArriveCAN app.

Some costs may have increased

You may have to add some additional costs into your travel budget this year. Plan for up to $200 per traveller for COVID-19 PCR tests, which are currently required for re-entry into Canada but not needed to go south into the USA. Since this requirement seems to fluctuate based on health advisories, it is best to be ready just in case.

Check with your travel health insurance provider before you plan your trip. Find out if COVID-19 related medical care is covered and to what extent. Some insurance companies may offer discounts for vaccinated individuals. Make sure to ask your provider if the policy also covers quarantine costs in case you have to isolate on your way home.

Hot destinations to visit

Many people who have always gone back to the same RV resort each winter have given up their reservations. This provides you with a great opportunity to explore the southern states a little bit more. There are incredible RV resort destinations to discover in Florida, Arizona, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Nevada, and California. This is a great time to visit all those places you have been dreaming about throughout the pandemic.

Wherever you plan on visiting, make sure you secure your spot as soon as possible. Cabin fever has everyone impatient to get away. It is expected that more snowbirds than ever before will be driving south this year to escape the cold.

Go with the flow

This year, the theme of RV travel for snowbirds will be to go with the flow. The ever-changing travel rules along with the flocks of other travellers heading south might give you some bumps along the way. Luckily, there is almost always somewhere to park your RV for the night while you figure out your next steps.

I predict that this year will be the best year yet for snowbirds heading south. You can finally escape the confines of travel restrictions and enjoy some beautiful winter weather. Have fun, no matter if your trip goes exactly as planned or you have to take a few detours. Enjoy being in the sunshine while everyone else is still chipping ice!
