Alberta is finally emerging from an extended cold snap, which means that it is a great time for winter camping. Hopefully, the coldest of the cold is behind us and everyone can get out to enjoy all of the fun activities that winter has to offer.

To make winter RVing even more fun, we’ve compiled a list of our 23 top winter camping hacks:

Campsite Hacks

1) Tie a tarp between two trees to cut down on wind in your campsite.

2) Park your RV in the sun to take advantage of nature’s heater.

3) Put down 1” support boards before parking your rig to protect it from sinking if the ground thaws.

4) Don’t forget your shovel! Shovel out an area around your RV when you arrive so spending time outside is more enjoyable.

Keeping the Interior Comfortable

5) RVs can get moisture buildup while winter camping. Use a portable dehumidifier keep it dry.

6) Cook outdoors as much as possible to reduce condensation.

7) Take the time to check and improve the seal on windows, vents, and doors before you head out.

What to Wear

8) Pack lots of layers, but don’t forget to peel them off as you warm up. If you start to sweat, you will end up getting damp and cold.   

9) Wear sunglasses! The light reflecting off of the snow can really hurt your eyes.

10) Use glove and boot warmers to keep your digits toasty.

Staying Safe in Extreme Weather

11) Keep an eye on the weather. Make sure you plan your daily activities according to the current weather report.

12) Pack extra blankets and clothes just in case your RV’s heater breaks down.

13) Bring along a hairdryer for thawing equipment.

14) Keep an eye on your battery levels using a battery hydrometer.

15) Make sure you have a cellphone battery charger or two charged and ready just in case you need to call for help.

Cooking in the Winter

16) Bring along pre-cooked meals that just need to be heated before serving.

17) Hearty pot meals like chili, soups, and stews are great for warming up from the inside out.

18) Cooking over the fire, even in the winter, is always fun.

19) Don’t forget to drink water or hot herbal tea. It can be easy to forget about hydration when you’re cold.

Stay Active

20) Have a blast enjoying winter sports like ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, skating, and snowshoeing.

21) When you’re hiking, look out for animal tracks and do some birdwatching.

22) Camp near a downhill ski resort.

23) Try some fun winter outdoor games like snow golf or have a snow sculpture contest.
