Stop mosquitoes from bugging you by burning the right scented candles around the camp fire.

There are hacks for everything camping related, from tips for improving safety to tricks for increasing storage space and keeping the bugs away.

Here are our top eight camping hacks that we think will change our RV life this season:

1 Nighttime Safety

Glow-in-the-dark tape and stickers can help keep everyone safe and make manoeuvring in the dark a little easier. Stick them to your RV’s door handle and light switches so you can see where you are going in the dark. Some glow-in-the-dark tape comes with an anti-slip coating that makes it great for the stairs. You can even stick some to your dog’s collar so you can keep track of your pooch after dark. Many people prefer this option over lights because it is less intrusive while you are sleeping.

2 Keeping Moisture Away

Save the desiccant packets (silica gel) that come in boxes of shoes and other products. They absorb moisture and are non-toxic. Put a few in your RV cupboards, drawers, and cabinets in order to reduce moisture and cut down on the chance of mould or mildew becoming a problem.

3 Stick it Down

Mounting putty or museum putty is a pliable putty that is used to keep objects from moving around. It can be used to hold down décor items, soap dishes, or anything else that you want to stay in place.

4 Great Storage Solutions

Most RVs have a few spots that end up being wasted space. Increase your storage by putting a set of plastic drawers in these little nooks and crannies. They come in a wide range of sizes and are easily stackable. Smaller drawers are great for storing things like charging cables, spices, and extra batteries. The larger drawers can hold games, blankets, toys, and canned goods.

5 Light up the Night

LED headlamps are a versatile addition to any RV. Not only are they great for hands-free light, but they also make good lamps. Stick them in the underside of a shelf, inside a cupboard, in the bathroom, or use them for nightlights next to the bed.

6 DIY Firestarter

Get your fire going fast with your own homemade fire starters. Dip cotton pads into melted wax and allow to harden. Stack them in a waterproof container or zip top baggie and they will be ready whenever you want to quickly start a fire.

7 Easy and Fast Coffee

There are a lot of camping coffee hacks out there, but my favourite is also the simplest. Use single serving instant coffee sleeves. They are the fastest way to get a good cup of coffee. Simply add hot water and stir. Coffee sleeves are available in a wide variety of roasts and from a number of big name coffee brands. You can also find instant versions of lattes and cappuccinos.

8 Bugs Be Gone

Sitting by the campfire can often be ruined by pesky mosquitoes. Try adding a tightly wrapped bundle of sage, eucalyptus, or rosemary to your campfire. They keep the bugs away and also smell great.

One of the fun parts of camping is trying out these types of hacks and finding the ones that work best for you and your family. Have fun, try out some new tricks, and see what works!
