Like many Albertans, University of Calgary Continuing Education students are considering their options for future-proofing their careers. Continuing Education credentials can be a great catalyst for anyone wishing to upskill or reskill, at a time when many are directly affected by the technological changes in our core industries.

Continuing Education grad, Karen Cunliffe, recently completed the Certificate in Professional Management specializing in Risk Management. She is a firm believer in future-proofing her career in Calgary’s oil and gas sector. “If I hadn’t been keeping my eye on the future, I probably would have been unemployed by now,” says Karen. “I’ve survived two very – very – deep rounds of layoffs, and I credit that to my education.”

Karen found the flexibility of online learning and broad selection of courses created the best option for her. “For people like me, who can’t take the time off for full-time studies, UCalgary’s flexibility and vast array of offerings … is the only viable option,” she says.

Continuing Education grad, Michael McCallum, also future-proofed his career by taking part-time courses in preparation for taking his career down a different path, when the opportunity arose. “With the economy the way it was when I enrolled two years ago … leaving my current job to pursue full-time course work was just not an option.”

The courses Michael took gave him the credibility he needed to move into a new role in his field. “Now, I sort of feel that I’ve gotten to where I want to be and I’m living the dream.”

University of Calgary Continuing Education programs vary in length and delivery. All are taught by high-quality instructors and at times that suit a busy schedule.

Some of the technical certificates and programs aimed at helping people upskill or reskill include app development, web development, search engine optimization and data analysis. The “soft” skills are also in demand for anyone looking to gain training in people management, project, or process management. Programs in these areas include Emerging Leaders, Human Resource Management and Professional Management.

There’s never been a better time to consider your options for the future. Visit conted.ucalgary.ca to find an online or on campus program for your personal and professional development.
