WESTLOCK – A lead-footed driver nabbed zipping 50 km/h over the posted speed limit on Highway 2 in late 2022 now faces a huge fine, but no driver’s licence suspension.

In Westlock Court of Justice April 12, agent Randy Semeniuk entered a guilty plea to speeding on behalf of Kurtis Bryan Pysyk who was caught travelling 154 km/h on Highway 2 on Nov. 12, 2022 — Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Court Checks was able to confirm the offence date and location, while RCMP said via e-mail they could not provide additional details as the stop was performed by the Alberta Sheriff’s Highway Patrol.

Provincial Crown Shelia Ries asked for a $600 fine, but no driver’s licence suspension, while Justice Vaughn Myers granted Pysyk until July 31 to pay the fine.

This is second-straight week and third in the past five months for drivers being convicted of travelling 50 km/h over the speed limit — in Westlock Court of Justice April 5, Daniel Nmerukini pleaded guilty to speeding after being caught by RCMP travelling 159 km/h on Highway 44 between Fawcett on Chisholm Feb. 7, 2023. In Westlock Provincial Court Dec. 14, 2022, Nicholas Martin Holt, 42, pleaded guilty to speeding after he was caught travelling 182 km/h on Highway 2 near Range Road 250 about 24 kilometres northeast of Westlock on Feb. 17, 2022.

In a past interview, Alberta RCMP Traffic – Westlock Unit Commander Sgt. Leigh Drinkwater said that normally speeding tickets of this magnitude would add six demerits to one’s driving record, while Driver Fitness and Monitoring will be the body that would impose a possible driving suspension.
