Asbestos removal at Capri Mall

Capri Mall under construction to remove asbestos.

The Town of Westlock issued a closure order for the Capri Mall May 11 following an inspection in April, which it did not pass. Unless the mall owners complete the work, the businesses will be forced to move.

In September 2023, Capri Mall closed its doors permanently after failing to comply with safety regulations from the town council. The owners failed to remedy the electrical and fire codes that were deemed unsafe. The location has stood empty on the corner of 100 street and 104 avenue. Recently fences have made their way around the building after nearly two years of being closed off.

Town of Westlock CAO Simone Wiley confirmed earlier this week that the former mall is under construction to remove the asbestos. While Wiley couldn't talk to the future of the location, she did say that "... putting up of the fences is a good indication that the owners are taking steps toward demolition because asbestos removal means you're doing pre-demo things."
