WESTLOCK - One woman is dead, while a man and child are in hospital in Edmonton following a tragic mid-afternoon, Christmas-eve crash between a passenger van and pickup truck two kilometres north of the Town of Westlock on Highway 44 and Township Road 602.

Westlock RCMP advised just after 4:30 p.m., Dec. 24, that they remain at the multi-vehicle fatal collision between the van, which had two adults and four children on board, and a pickup truck with a lone female occupant who was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP say their preliminary investigation suggests that road conditions were a contributor to the fatal crash. One adult and one child from the family van were transported to the University of Alberta Hospital via ground ambulance, while the remaining occupants were transported to the Westlock hospital. RCMP also report that those transported to hospital have non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic disruption remains ongoing for north and southbound traffic on Highway 44 north, as well east and westbound travel at RR 602, until later this evening and motorists should use a different route. The RCMP collision reconstructionist is presently on scene investigating the circumstances that led to the collision.

RCMP advise road conditions are icy with changing temperatures impacting surface conditions and their “thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this time.”
