WESTLOCK/BARRHEAD — Two motorists were issued Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) for alcohol and cannabis use while operating a motor vehicle during check stops conducted near Westlock and Barrhead on Dec. 2, which was also National Impaired Enforcement Day.
As noted in a release, members of Alberta RCMP Traffic – Westlock participated in the local enforcement campaign, along with members from the Westlock RCMP detachment and the Alberta Sheriff’s Highway Patrol.
The check stops and other traffic enforcement initiatives were set up on Highways 2, 651, 44 and 33 in both Westlock County and the County of Barrhead.
A total of 236 vehicles were checked and two motorists failed roadside screening, resulting in the two IRS. One vehicle was seized.
Provincially, check stops conducted across Alberta resulted in 23 impaired drivers being removed from roadways.
Seventeen of those motorists received IRS Fails and four received IRS Warns. Under the province’s IRS program, Fails and Warns have varying levels of penalties depending on whether it is a first, second or third offence.
Those penalties range from a three-day driver’s licence suspension on the lowest end to a lifetime driver’s licence suspension and $2,000 fine on the highest end.
