Drugs and break-in tools seized following overnight arrest in Westlock

Obscured licence plate leads to 1 a.m. traffic stop on March 23

WESTLOCK – Two men are behind bars awaiting a bail hearing as they face drug and possession of break-in tools charges following an overnight police traffic stop.

Westlock RCMP Detachment acting commander Cpl. Riley Sutherland said during a March 23 patrol around 1 a.m., officers noticed a Chrysler sedan driving with its licence plate obscured “which is against the Traffic Safety Act.”

They initiated a stop and found that the driver, an Edmonton man in his early 30s, had “multiple outstanding warrants”, while the passenger, a Westlock man in his early 40s, was in breach of his 24-hour curfew, as well as a condition to not be in a vehicle without the registered owner present.

“And as well, to not be in possession of break-in tools. And during the arrest they also found a small quantity of GHB,” she noted.

Names of the two were not released as both were awaiting a bail hearing, while their first appearance in Westlock Provincial Court hasn’t been scheduled — Sutherland said the one man also faces “a bunch of traffic tickets” while they’ll be laying charges of drug possession, possession of break-and-enter tools and breaching of conditions.
