Extreme cold not keeping voters away

Polls for Westlock byelection open until 8 p.m.

WESTLOCK — The extreme cold has not kept Westlock residents from coming out to vote in the Town of Westlock byelection today, Jan. 10, taking place at the Westlock and District Community Hall.

Hundreds of residents packed the hall Wednesday afternoon, with officials saying “it hasn’t stopped all day.”

Residents in the long lineups waiting to vote also commented on the unusually large turnout, with some saying they have never seen an election lineup in Westlock with so many people.

Inside the Alberta Hall, three voting stations are set up for voters, with several current and former town staff on site to assist with the day. Polls opened at 10 a.m. and are open until 8 p.m. tonight.

The byelection was called in November following the resignations of Mayor Ralph Leriger, who stepped down to pursue a role in private industry, and Coun. Jon Kramer, who resigned from council in order to run for mayor.

Kramer and former town councillor and mayoral candidate Robin Brett are on the ballot for mayor, while five candidates have stepped forward for council, including Laurie Hodge, Benita Pedersen, Alair Plett, Derrill Rayner and David Truckey.
