A Westlock County family lost its home after a March 19 fire tore through the building and collapsed part of the roof.
County fire chief John Biro said his department got a call from the property owner around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon to respond to a structural fire at the corner of Highway 2 and Township Road 592, south of Clyde.
The Pickardville and county fire departments responded and found flames coming from the north end of the building.
Firefighters remained on the scene for five hours, Biro said. In addition, the Clyde fire department was called in to provide addition personnel and air tanks.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but Biro said it’s possible it started in the north part of the building, where the flames were seen.
He said there might be some contents that are salvageable, but the structure is a total loss. The building is still standing, but it’s no longer structurally sound.
“The biggest thing is that there were no injuries and no one was inside the house,” he said.
The biggest problem the firefighters faced in battling the blaze was getting their equipment onto the property because the driveway was heavily snow-covered. However, Biro was able to find a neighbour who cleared the driveway with a tractor, making it easier for the firefighters to do their job.
“It’s nice to get neighbourly help,” he said.
