The Town of Westlock and Westlock County fire departments are co-hosting a Fire Prevention Week event Sept. 30 at the Town of Westlock Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The half-day event includes displays, safety demonstrations and a free pancake breakfast.

WESTLOCK — Fire prevention is about safety first in all situations, even when cooking.

That’s why cooking safety will be a focus of this year’s Fire Prevention Week event, co-hosted by the Town of Westlock and Westlock County fire departments, on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Town of Westlock Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Something new this year that we’re going to do is a cooking fire demonstration with a stove top prop,” said Town of Westlock fire chief Stuart Koflick, noting this year’s theme of “cooking safety starts with you.”

“It’s based on statistical data. Depending on where the occurrence of certain types of fires are, that’s where the National Fire Protection Association focuses educational pieces and comes up with a theme.”

The event will also feature displays, safety demonstrations and a free pancake breakfast.

“It’s an annual event we do in conjunction with Westlock County,” said Koflick. “The community can come down, check in and get a passport … (then) go around to each of the fire safety presentations and have it stamped or signed off and once you complete all that education, you’re welcome to a pancake breakfast.”

Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 8-14. For more information visit the Fire Prevention Week website.
