On Feb. 22, students from St. Mary School attended a mock accident set up by local emergency services outside of the Westlock Youth for Christ Centre as part of the PARTY (Preventing Alcohol and Related Trauma in Youth) program.
After a presentation inside the Youth for Christ Centre, students were led outside to watch as emergency medical services personnel and firefighters worked to rescue the “victims” (volunteers wearing make-up to evoke serious injuries) of the nearby accident.
The purpose of the exercise was to show how much time it takes emergency crews to extricate the passengers from a heavily damaged vehicle, as well as the heavy emotional toll it exacts on both survivors and emergency crews.
