It appears the traffic lights destined for Highway 18 and 108 Avenue will be delayed, says an Alberta Transportation spokesperson.

The lights, which come with a $300,000 cost, were announced in February after years of campaigning by the present and previous town councils and residents. The original plan was that they would be installed by this fall, however it’s now unlikely that will happen.

Alberta Transportation’s Carrie Sancartier said the department is currently in the process of preparing to tender the project.

“We expect the project to be tendered in the next three to four weeks,” Sancartier said.

Alberta Transportation undertook studies for the intersection in 2006 and again in 2014. The studies indicated that the government should move forward with the installation.

Sancartier said the tendering process could take as little as two weeks or as long as several months. She said it’s too early to speculate when work would begin.

The province will pick up the entire cost of the project.
