Murtaza Jamaly is Westlock’s newest town councillor after winning Monday’s byelection in a landslide.
Out of 797 votes cast, Jamaly earned 474, or almost 60 per cent of the overall vote. In second place was Benita Pedersen with 183 votes, while Pierre Ouimet finished third with 140. Results are currently unofficial.
Jamaly said he credits his victory to a strong campaign and looks forward to joining council.
“It’s a relief to win,” he said. “I look forward to supporting our community in the next two years and hope to make meaningful change.”
Jamaly will serve on town council for two years until the next municipal election in October 2017.
The byelection was called in August after former Coun. Sheila Foley tendered her resignation after moving to southern Alberta to be closer to family.
Foley was fist elected in 2010 and was reelected in 2013 and served on council for parts of five years.
