WESTLOCK – A senior caught driving close to 60 km/h over the posted 100 km/h speed limit on Highway 33 almost two years ago, faces a mammoth fine, but no driver’s licence suspension.
Appearing in Westlock Court of Justice May 3 via CCTV, agent Randy Semeniuk entered a guilty plea to speeding on behalf of Robert Alan Redel, 68, “who’s a retired professional.” Justice Gerry Annetts agreed to the $900 fine proposed by provincial Crown Rizwan Suleman and Semeniuk and gave Redel until July 28 to pay, noting if he doesn’t, he’ll serve seven days in jail.
“Sixty-eight-years-old, driving 157 in a 100 zone in a 2020 Corvette. Good for him,” Justice Annetts deadpanned.
While Suleman did not read any details of the offence into the record, Alberta RCMP Traffic-Westlock Sgt. Leigh Drinkwater confirmed that Redel was stopped at 11:25 a.m., Aug. 9, 2021, on Highway 33 in the County of Barrhead.
In past interviews, Drinkwater said that normally a speeding ticket of this magnitude would add six demerits to one’s driving record, while Driver Fitness and Monitoring will be the body that would impose a possible driving suspension.
