More than a year after Westlock County called for a Municipal Affairs inspection, councillors and residents will get their chance to see the results.

Inspectors and representatives from Alberta Municipal Affairs will be in town Aug. 30 to present the municipal inspection report to council and the public.

Officials will privately meet with council at the county office at 9 a.m. that morning, followed by a public meeting at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Hall.

“The inspector is the one that presents the report and then if there are any directives or initiatives from the minister based on what’s in the report, those will be explained to council by someone from Municipal Affairs,” CAO Leo Ludwig explained. “Then they would like a half-hour recess between that meeting and then the meeting with the public where that process is repeated.”

The meetings will be about 60 to 90 minutes each.

Last June, council requested Municipal Affairs step in and by the end of the summer, preliminary interviews with council and county staff were done.

By November, the province confirmed an inspection would be going ahead and in March contracted out the work to Strategic Steps Inc.— Strategic Steps is currently working on a report for the Town of Athabasca.

Inspectors interviewed county staff, councillors and the public, reviewed policies and bylaws and sat in on council meetings in April.

The inspection also looked at conduct, financial status and capital projects among others.

The inspection wrapped up and submitted to Municipal Affairs minister Shaye Anderson earlier this summer.
