No election needed in Clyde

Instead of plastering posters and banners, or shaking hands, politicians in the Village of Clyde remained silent until Nomination Day.

On Sept. 23, incumbents Nat Dvernichuk, Doug Nyal, Christa Clausing and Neil Olson let their names stand, along with Don Domingue who claimed the fifth seat, which had been open.

With no other challengers, the election is over.

“I think that we can carry on and have a great council,” said mayor Dvernichuk.

“As a council we have kept together and gotten an awful lot done in this village and the slate is never clear. We’ll certainly continue to do our best and carry on where we left off.”

Nyal said he was hoping there would have been more interest for the electorate, but wasn’t surprised with the outcome.

“My initial thoughts were a little bit of disappointment that that’s all the interest we’re seeing coming out of the community,” said Nyal.

“So, disappointment, but not surprised. Disappointment there wasn’t more people showing an interest and putting their names in.

“I’m not disappointed in who was running, I’m quite pleased with who was running. It’s a good group of people.”

Although each councillor described feelings of ambivalence about returning to a seat on village council, all four reps ultimately decided to follow through.

“I had a feeling there wasn’t going to be that many people putting in forms,” said Clausing. “I can’t speak on behalf of others — if they were in the same boat, and if they were humming and hawing, but it should be business as usual because everyone’s the same — except for we’ve got our seat filled. The empty one.”

Domingue could not be reached for comment before the Westlock News went to press.

“It means that we’ve got a full council that’s going to do the best that they can for the Village of Clyde,” said Olson concluded.
