WESTLOCK – The Pickardville Canada Post Office, in operation for nearly 115 years and whose first postmaster is the man the community was named after, will close its doors at noon, Thursday, Sept. 29.
Canada Post media relations Lisa Liu confirmed the closure is due to the retirement of long-time Pickardville postmaster Mildred Morin — see her story in an upcoming edition — and their search for a replacement is underway.
Liu, who said it’s Canada Post’s intention to eventually reopen the facility, notes that during the transition period, mail for Pickardville residents will be made available at the Westlock Canada Post Office.
“Letters are being sent to customers notifying them of the change and signage will also posted on Friday, Sept. 23 at the Pickardville (Canada Post) Post Office informing customers,” said Liu via e-mail.
Liu, who thanked the residents of Pickardville “for their patience and understanding”, directed customers with questions to contact the company’s customer service team online at canadapost.ca/support or by telephone at 1-866-607-6301 (TTY: 1-800-267-2797).
According to the website prairie-towns.com, the Hamlet of Pickardville was named after the community’s first postmaster, William Pickard, who held the position from 1907 until 1914 — the post office officially opened Oct. 1, 1907.
