RCMP use spike belt to arrest man wanted in gas station hold-up in Athabasca

ATHABASCA – A 52-year-old Athabasca man faces 13 charges including robbery and using a firearm in the commission of an offence after RCMP say he robbed a local gas station at gun-point late Sunday night.

According to an Aug. 29 RCMP press release, at around 10:15 p.m., Aug. 27, Athabasca RCMP received a call of an armed robbery in progress at a local gas station. Officers were on the scene quickly and tracked down the suspect vehicle south heading south out of Athabasca on Highway 2.

Ultimately, police initiated a 70-kilometre pursuit that ended with Westlock RCMP deploying a spike belt which led to the “safe arrest” of the suspect — in a follow-up e-mail Aug. 29, Westlock RCMP Detachment acting commander Cpl. Riley Sutherland said the driver was stopped in the Nestow area.

Gordon Goulet, 52, remains behind bars following an Aug. 28 bail hearing, and faces three counts of careless use of a firearm, two counts each of using a firearm in commission of an offence and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, plus single charges of robbery with a firearm, robbery with a restricted firearm, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and flight from peace. According to the RCMP, his next appearance is slated for Morinville Court of Justice Aug. 31.
