BARRHEAD – The Simmental Cattle Competition at the Farmfair 50 Anniversary event on had representation from Barrhead and Westlock area exhibitors.
This event was the first time Alios Kerckhof with Pink Creek Cattle Company had attended the Farmfair show and sale.
“We had those two heifer calves going to a different sale,” said Kerckhof before he was heard about the Farmfair event.
“We figured if we're going to take to heifer calves then take a couple bulls.”
“We got everything ready because show people we weren’t, and we didn't want to show up with cattle that didn't look the part.”
“We weren't sure what to think of going in so we had hired a gal and they did all the work.”
Farmfair was the second show Kerckhof has been too although he has been to Mexico to judge in a show a couple of years ago.
Kerckhof said the Farmfair event was good, with lots of international guests in attendance.
“It's a good way to meet a lot of people at once. Just everybody's kind of in one place right.”
Kerckhof mentioned they did well, selling the heifer calves in the sale.
Champion and Reserve Champion for the Fullblood Yearling Bull was won by Pine Creek Simmentals in County of Barrhead with their entries– Champion Pine Creek Arcon 30L and Pine Creek Rally 951L– Reserve Champion.
Pine Creek Simmentals from County of Barrhead won Reserve Champion Fullblood Yearling Heifer with their entry Pine Creek Jackie 600L.
Dream Maker Cattle Company from Westlock won Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Female with their entry DMCC Katriss 414M who also won Reserve Champion Percentage Heifer Calf.
Dream Maker Cattle Company from Westlock placed third in the Split 1 Intermediate Bull Calf division with their entry PEAG Betts 402M.
Dream Maker sold the Zwicker Family a shorthorn steer that won Champion in the prospect show.
“There was lots of people happy to be back in the barns,” said Payton Gregoire with Dream makers Cattle Company.
“Farmfair has done an outstanding job every year. I think that it was really good that they brought back some of the markets and stuff. It brought a lot of people in.”
“There was a lot of questions asked of the Breeders and producers that were there; just about anything agriculture wise.”
“I can tell you right now every single person that's a producer there is more than willing to say anything or give any kind of knowledge to the people that come in and want to learn,” shared Gregoire.
“We also got Simmental influence Champion in the prospect show.”
Masterloc Simmentals from Tiger Lily won Reserve Champion Fullblood Heifer Calf with their entry BJL Miss Pol First Love 58M.
Masterloc Simmentals from Tiger Lily were in 7 place for Fullblood Yearling Heifer division with Masterloc PFF MS Lettie 25L.
Tierra Sol Cattle Company from Clyde placed fourth in Junior Yearling Heifer Division with their entry TSC LYRA 340L.
The Alberta Simmental Association states that this breed from the Simme Valley in Switzerland has become the number one breed in Canada on their website.
