SMS Class of 1982 holds 40-year reunion

Former grads from the previous year also attend June 3-4 event

WESTLOCK – On May 28, 1982, a class of 29 graduated from St. Mary School — little did those eager, young men and women realize or think about what they would be facing once they were out in the big world.

Earlier this month, June 3-4, 11 from the Class of 1982 returned for their 40-year reunion. Grace Feheley and Robin Campbell, who were with that class in the earlier years, but completed their high school at R.F. Staples School, did join with the St. Mary group for the reunion. Also joining with them for the weekend of fun and reminiscing were five students from the 1981 graduating class of 20.

The group gathered at the rural home of Terry and Christine Vachon (Christine Dul) Vachon, who was a 1982 grad, northwest of Pickardville June 3 for a meet and greet and enjoyed some pizza from their local hangout as kids. They spent that evening visiting around the fire, sharing stories and memories from the days gone by — it was the perfect welcoming place for the reunion.

Saturday, June 4, they met at St. Mary’s for a tour of the school, threw a few balls around and the “boys” shot a few hoops remembering the “good old days.” Pictures were taken in front of the school with those in attendance and one of their teachers, Pauline Urquhart, came out from Edmonton to join the class for the tour.

The group returned to the Vachon’s and before the meal they gathered for class group photos. After supper, there was more reminiscing time around the fire and the class historian read the history from 1982 — those stories had the group in tears as they were laughing so hard. There was also some money left over from the pig roast, so they decided to donate $110 to St. Mary School.

The weekend brought strong connections of the group with their past, and plans were made to reconnect again in the near future, but not another 40 years.

As Rachelle Sabourin noted, “We were all reminded how great it was to graduate from a small-town school.”
