R.F. Staples School’s senior girls and boys basketball teams have received approval from Pembina Hills trustees for a trip to California during the Christmas break.

WESTLOCK – R.F. Staples School’s senior girls and boys basketball teams have received tentative approval for a December 2023 to January 2024 post-Christmas trip to California.

While Pembina Hills School Division trustees gave the thumbs up at their Feb. 22 meeting, Supt. Michael Borgfjord indicated it’s not a final stamp of approval and “things could change in the future.” All procedures around field trips and national/international tours are governed by Administrative Procedure (AP) 60-03, which states that all national and international tours require approval in principle by trustees.

Borgfjord said there are approximately 24 students participating in the trip to San Diego and Anaheim, Calif., from Dec. 26, 2023, to Jan. 2, 2024. Wade Hicks is acting as the lead teacher.

In addition to visiting Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland, the students will be taking in a National Basketball Association (NBA) game and a San Diego State University basketball game.

The report to the board states, “This trip is a great opportunity for students from the Westlock area to travel and get to see a part of the world that they might not get to experience any other time in their lives.”

Borgfjord said all field trips outside of Canada must go through an approved vendor (or at least be vetted by the division) except in the case of trips to the U.S. — that said, administration will be following up to make sure the vendor meets the division’s satisfaction.
