Team Burchett claims final bonspiel of the season

Twelves teams hit the ice in Westlock March 10-12

WESTLOCK – Despite some last-minute changes which forced the Westlock Curling Club’s annual men’s bonspiel to become an ‘open’ event, 12 teams still hit the ice March 10-12 with Team Burchett rising to the top to claim the ‘A’.

Eight men’s foursomes, along with four mixed teams from across the region, competed in the three-day spiel, which saw Team Gervais claim the ‘B’ and Team Boissonnault capture the ‘C’.

Past president Paula Clark said despite the challenges that forced the format change, a great time was had by all.

“We had our regulars and then a few others. Everyone had a good time,” said Clark. “It turned out really good. Numbers were low but it was a successful weekend.”

With their bonspiels over for the season, Clark said they’ll wrap league play March 23 with the annual wind-up event March 26 where they hand out awards during a pot-luck supper.

“We have two more Tuesdays and two more Thursdays and two more Wednesdays of stick league,” she said. “Tuesday and Thursday (leagues) were down a couple of teams but Wednesday was brand new and I think that went over very well because we had consistently 14 to 16 curlers and then we had that one-day stick spiel in February.

“Everyone’s excited for next year as we’ve got a few ideas on the go so we’ll see how that goes.”
