Thunderbirds honour their own at annual awards banquet

Annual event held Nov. 29 at Memorial Hall

WESTLOCK — Despite some tough competition and challenges this season, the Westlock Thunderbirds still had plenty to smile about, as was evident at the football club’s annual banquet and awards night Nov. 29.

The event at the Memorial Hall also included an AGM, season recap, season-end video, executive scholarships, and the award presentations across several categories including best defensive player, best offensive player, heart and soul award, most improved player, rookie of the year, the Robert Bokenfohr Most Valuable Player award and the leadership award.

Head coach Travis Darling, who attended the banquet virtually from Saskatchewan, along with co-coach Jon Kramer, lauded the season as a success despite some uncertainties and challenges.

“In a lot of ways it’s kind of reminiscent of my first year of coaching 16 years ago because we’re trying to now build from the ground up again and figure out what this (football team) is going to be,” said Kramer. “Playing six-aside-football is a very different game — same equipment but a very different sport.”

The Thunderbirds were one of 15 teams in the Alberta 6-A-Side Football League this season and faced some tough competition, but Kramer noted “it just made sense for us.”

“It was the right choice that Travis and the team made. It was a well-structured season and a game that we could teach the players that they could learn and develop their skills,” said Kramer, noting they recruited players from Onoway, Athabasca and Boyle.

One of those players was Thunderbirds MVP Calyx Fertuck from Athabasca.

Fertuck, a running back and linebacker, was an impressive force this season and was lauded by coaches for his ability to his step up and fill any role.

“I’m really happy about it — it’s a really awesome experience,” said Fertuck. “This year I learned that the off-season is just as important as the game season and staying in shape will be most important for me.”

Defensive player of the year Jaina Rudderham was honoured to be chosen for a second-consecutive year.

“It just gives me confidence in my ability and how other people view me. It really gives a perspective on where I think I can go,” said Rudderham.

Despite a 1-6 record, Kramer said the Thunderbirds season finished on a high note, although they are losing several Grade 12s, there are many younger players expected to return and step in.

“It was really good football at the end of the season,” said Kramer, noting community support for the team. “I think the future’s really bright for the program … there’s a lot of adults invested and businesses so I think people will rally around the program and we’re going to see it flourish again.”
