WESTLOCK — Westlock RCMP are still investigating a collision between a car and an SUV at the intersection of Highways 44 and 651, also known as the Busby turnoff, at around 6 p.m. on Oct. 10.

Staff Sgt. Jeff Sehn said the collision involved a yellow Ford Focus and a brown Infiniti FX.

There were minor injuries as a result of the collision and one driver was taken to the Westlock Healthcare Centre as a precaution. Both vehicles needed to be towed.

Sehn indicated that no charges had been laid yet as the matter remains under investigation.

“It appears as though one pf the vehicles may have turned left in front of the other. We’re not sure yet,” he said.

Thanksgiving check stop

Westlock general duty officers and Westlock Traffic Services both participated in a large joint force check stop on Oct. 8 along Highway 2 southeast of Slave Lake.

Sehn said that in addition to Westlock, the joint operation involved general duty officers from Whitecourt and Slave Lake, the Redwater traffic unit, Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers, Alberta Conservation, the MD of Lesser Slave River community peace officer and the Sheriff Highway Patrol.

A total of 437 vehicles were checked for a variety of offences. Sehn said a large number of warnings were issued for driving with licences, vehicle equipment regulations and so on.

As well, three vehicles were seized and two roadside sanctions were issued to drivers who had consumed alcohol, one of which was a commercial vehicle driver.

One individual was also arrested for outstanding warrants and Fish and Wildlife officers also seized some deer carcasses.

It’s worth noting that this was part of a larger initiative organized by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police over the Thanksgiving weekend, which was dubbed #OperationImpact2023.

As part of this campaign, Alberta RCMP issued more than 2,000 tickets, including 55 tickets for distracted driving, 40 for seatbelt infractions, 15 for liquor offences and 902 tickets for speeding. Notably, one driver was ticketed for travelling 185 kilometres per hour.

Immediate roadside sanctions were also issued to 86 drivers found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
