WESTLOCK — Dozens of curlers from across the region took part in the Westlock Curling Club’s annual Town & Country Bonspiel this month, with Team Guidinger from Spruce Grove taking home the top honour as the A event winner.
The two-day event on Jan. 6 and 7 featured prizes and a steak banquet Saturday. Despite a lower number of teams than usual, still saw 22 teams from the region including those from Athabasca, Spruce Grove, Barrhead, Edmonton, Boyle, Entwihistle and Westlock.
“We had mens, ladies and mixed teams entered as it was an open spiel,” said past president Paula Clark. “We did have quite a few new teams enter this year which is wonderful and quite a few younger (curlers) in their late 20s to mid 30s, which was great.”
The event started Friday night with three draws, followed by five draws on Saturday along with the steak banquet and finished up Sunday with the semi-finals and finals.
Team Guidinger from Spruce Grove was the A event winner and included Andrew Schilie, Jamie Gibert, Chad Lemey, and skip Randy Guidinger, while Team Borle from Barrhead finished as the B event winner and included skip Brayden Borle, Brooke Wolfe, Niki Wolfe and Josh Morin. Team Burchett from Westlock was the C event winner and included skip Albert Burchett, Melissa Burchett, Mathew Burchett, and Lamont Montgomery and Team Gervais from Westlock went home as the D event winners with skip Stephane Gervais, Hugh Clark, Davis Byvank, and Randy Musterer.
The club will hold three more bonspiels this season, the February Open on Feb. 9-10, a one-day ladies bonspiel on Feb. 24 and the following month, the annual men’s bonspiel from March 8-10.
