WESTLOCK – A man charged with sexual contact with a child and sexual assault elected to be tried by judge and jury with a preliminary hearing on Nov. 27.
He has been denied bail and appeared in Westlock Court of Justice on July 24 by CCTV from the remand centre.
There is a ban on publication to protect the identity of the child.
Man headed to trial on sexual assault charges
Another Westlock man facing charges of sexual interference, sexual assault and assault, also elected to be tried by judge and jury with a preliminary hearing on Jan. 29, 2025.
He was arrested earlier this year. There publication ban on identifying him.
Not guilty plea entered
Cody John King, 40, of Westlock pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a weapon and mischief.
He appeared in Alberta Court of Justice in Westlock on July 24 and a trial date was set for Nov. 27.
Earlier this month he was also charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and appears in court on those charges on Aug. 28.
25 days in jail for CSO breach
Mitchell Norman Kemp of Fawcett was handed 25 days in jail for breaching is Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) he has been on since May.
Kemp appeared in Westlock Court of Justice on July 24 by CCTV from the remand centre.
“It’s short but sharp,” said Justice Carrie-Ann Downey when sentencing Kemp, adding that he could have been sentenced to one year in jail.
He was arrested by Westlock RCMP on July 10 after driving past them when he was under a court-ordered curfew. He was charged again breaching his curfew on July 20.
Court heard that Kemp suffered a serious brain injury after a vehicle accident and hasn’t been provided treatment that was ordered by the court in his CSO.
