The Westlock Rock will welcome lacrosse teams from across the province for their first ever Rockfest event May 3-5 at the Rotary Spirit Centre. The three-day tournament will feature U11 and U13 teams including those from Edmonton, Sherwood Park and Red Deer.

WESTLOCK — The lacrosse season is now underway, and the Westlock Lacrosse Association is gearing up for its first-ever Rockfest from May 3-5 at the Rotary Spirit Centre.

The three-day tournament will feature registered teams from across the province including those from Red Deer, Beaumont, Edmonton, and Sherwood Park.

“This is for our U11 and U13 teams,” said association president Josh Reay. “It’s a tournament for the lacrosse association just to promote the game in town. We hope we can do it every year.”

Reay said the tournament won’t count toward the standings during the regular season, however it will be a competitive, fun event that will hand out heart and hustle awards and medals for the winning teams in each age division.

The tournament kicks off Friday afternoon May 3, with games all day Saturday and the semi-final and the final championship game on Sunday.

“It’s good to have some new teams to play and challenge your skills,” said Reay, noting the Westlock Rock will face some of the teams they play during the regular season at the three-day event.

The Westlock Lacrosse Association began its season in early April and has teams from U7 to U17 this year, but will not see the junior Rock team return, due to a lack of players.

“(Season) registration is still open until mid-May so if anybody’s still looking to play, we do have a few spots still,” said Reay, adding there are about 70 players registered so far. “I think it’s going to be a good, busy year this year.”

Rockfest organizers are still looking for volunteers and for anyone wishing to donate their time for the tournament or for more information on the Westlock Rock, email [email protected]
