WESTLOCK – A Westlock teenager had an unforgettable summer on the track, collecting a mitt full of medals at the Alberta Summer Games in Okotoks, July 20-23

Competing on the Zone 5 team, Isaac Kostiw, 14, won silver medals in the long jump, 5.16 metres, javelin, 37 metres, and shot put, 12.42 metres, and wound up third in the high jump with a leap of 1.67 metres — he also ran in the relay, but the foursome finished seventh.

Kostiw, who’ll be a Grade 10 students at R.F. Staples School this fall, earned the invite to be one of the 42 kids on the Zone 5 team following the Sherwood Park Track Classic held July 7-9, where he won a gold in the javelin with a throw of 42.02 metre, then finished sixth in high jump at 1.6 metres, 17th in the 100 metre race, and eighth in the long jump.

“We competed over six hours in plus-35-degree heat, but overall it was a good experience, and I had a lot of fun,” said Kostiw recalling the gruelling conditions during the Games.

With the track season now officially over, Kostiw said he’s gearing up for hockey season, which is just another sport he enjoys participating in.
