WESTLOCK – The Town of Westlock showed its gratitude to local volunteers with a community-wide barbecue on Thursday, May 1, serving up food, appreciation, and connection at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre.
Council members stepped behind the grill to dish out hamburgers, smokies, pop, and chips to guests of all ages during the free event. Mayor Jon Kramer and Councillor Murtaza Jamaly were among those flipping patties and welcoming attendees, creating a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
“For the last number of years, the town has been appreciating our volunteers in many ways,” said Chief Administrative Officer Simone Wiley. “Most recently, we’ve opened it up to volunteers across the entire community – not just those on our boards and committees.”
The expanded event reflects the town’s broader commitment to recognizing the efforts of all who contribute to its vitality, whether through service on municipal bodies or community programming.
“From a municipal government perspective, there’s certain things we do,” said Mayor Kramer. “But then eventually you run out of dollars and human power to get things done. Without the help of volunteers – whether it's programming at our rec facilities, FCSS, or other areas – we know volunteers are what keep communities like ours going and in good shape.”
Wiley added that the event isn’t just about recognition, but about building community. “It’s also about giving people a chance to connect and enjoy the spring weather together,” she said.
The barbecue is part of the town’s ongoing effort to foster a sense of belonging and community pride through grassroots engagement.
