WESTLOCK – The Westlock woman caught with just under 50 grams of meth, as well as cocaine and unstamped cigarettes, during a mid-November 2022 police raid on her home, will spend the remainder of the year locked in a jail cell.

In Westlock Provincial Court Feb. 8, Lana Kaye Wolfe, 44, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and breaching a conditional sentence order, while three additional counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and breaching a conditional sentence order (CSO), plus a single charge of possession of unstamped cigarettes, was withdrawn by federal Crown prosecutor Erwin Schulz.

Judge Joanne Heudes agreed to a joint-sentence submission from Schulz and defence lawyer John Sinclair on a 15-month (450-day) jail sentence for Wolfe, a single mother of four.

In custody since her Nov. 12, 2022, arrest, Wolfe received credit for 135 “enhanced days” leaving her 315 to serve. Judge Heudes also imposed a lifetime weapons ban on Wolfe, who was physically present in prisoner’s box in the courtroom and ordered her to submit a sample of her DNA to authorities.

“I’ve read her record and I think the joint submission is appropriate and consistent with the past,” said Judge Heudes. “I sincerely wish you the best. You have young ones I suppose you need to be taking care of and better places to be then here today.”

Sinclair, noting Wolfe has worked in the construction industry throughout her adult life, had a troubled childhood “as there were significant addiction issues within the family and physical violence.”

“She has been doing odd jobs trying to get by, as it where, but she realizes she has a number of issues she needs to work on,” said Sinclair.

The November bust

Schulz said that Westlock RCMP had Wolfe under surveillance Nov. 4, 2022, noting people going in and out of her 103rd Street home after 10 p.m., which was in violation of the CSO she received earlier in the year.

Then on Nov. 12, RCMP executed a search warrant on the home and found 49.64 grams of methamphetamine, cocaine, “suspected GHB”, alcohol, cannabis, bear spray and $3,293 in cash in her purse — RCMP said previously that in addition to the meth, they seized 1.44 grams of cocaine, 15 codeine pills and 31 packs of unstamped cigarettes. All the items seized during the arrest have been forfeited to the Crown.

The history of the CSO

In Westlock Provincial Court June 22, 2022, Wolfe pleaded guilty to seven counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and a single charge of possession of methamphetamine — four additional charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of careless use of a firearm and one charge of unauthorized possession of a firearm were withdrawn at the time by Schulz.

At that sitting, Judge Michèle Collinson agreed to the joint-sentence submission that saw Wolfe receive an 11-month CSO that included a host of conditions, like staying clear of drugs, and 80 hours of community service — Schulz noted Wolfe had only one prior drug conviction from 2017 where she was fined $500. For the first six months of the CSO was under 24-hour-a-day house arrest, while for the final five months she was supposed to obey a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
