WESTLOCK – A Fort McMurray-area woman who police say was drunk and had her kids in the back seat when she was stopped for speeding on Highway 44 on Easter Monday now faces charges of impaired driving.
In an April 13 interview, acting Westlock RCMP Detachment commander Cpl. Riley Sutherland said that around 7:35 p.m. on April 10, police were patrolling Highway 44 south of the Town of Westlock when they stopped a vehicle for speeding.
Alberta RCMP Traffic-Westlock Sgt. Leigh Drinkwater added that the vehicle was clocked at travelling 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone and during the stop, a mandatory alcohol screening was conducted on the driver, which produced a “fail.”
The woman was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and the two children in the vehicle were transported to the Westlock RCMP Detachment where, with the help of Victim Services, they were cared for while the impaired driving investigation continued.
Drinkwater said the driver was issued Alberta’s Immediate Roadside Sanctions which includes a 90-day driver’s licence suspension, 30-day vehicle seizure, and a $1,000 fine.
“It should be noted that the driver was not licensed, and the 90-day licence sanction will not allow her to apply for, or be granted, a driver’s licence in Alberta during this time,” Drinkwater added.
Police did not release the name of the woman, who is scheduled to make her first appearance in Westlock Court of Justice June 7 on charges of impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol limit over .08.
