Youth take flight during 'Discover Aviation' event Sept. 9

Dozens flock to Westlock Airport for free rides in planes owned by Westlock Flying Club members

On Sept. 9, the Westlock Flying Club hosted the bi-annual Discover Aviation event at the Westlock Airport, offering free rides up in their planes to a few dozen youth between the ages of eight to 17.

The purpose of the event, which is held every two years and was formerly named COPA For Kids, was to teach youth about the technology and science of flight, as well as to demonstrate the advantages of the hard work needed to get a pilot’s licence.

Prior to each flight, youth took part in a short ground school session conducted by pilots who explained how pilots prepared to take to the air and briefed on safety. Families were also welcome to walk around and inspect the aircraft or take in a barbecue put on by the flying club.
