$322K loan for LTIS playground committee approved

Aspen View Public School Division has approved the Landing Trail Intermediate School playground fundraising committee request for a loan of $322,470.

Aspen View Public School Division has approved the Landing Trail Intermediate School playground fundraising committee request for a loan of $322,470.

“The parent committee that presented to the board at the March 22 meeting presented a very comprehensive and exciting proposal for a new set of playground equipment for Landing Trail Intermediate School,” Aspen View superintendent Brian LeMessurier said at last Thursday’s regular school board meeting. “It is a very ambitious project, but a very achievable project.”

With the loan, LTIS could see a new playground this summer, according to chair of the fundraising committee Nancy Rosen.

“The committee proposed to the board that the board loan them the money to pay for the equipment upfront, and they then continue fundraising and pay it back to the board, as many other parent groups have done across the system,” said LeMessurier.

The board of trustees looks forward to the grand opening.

“We recognize that the students will benefit from having the playground around during school hours, but also the community,” LeMessurier said. “It will be a welcome addition to the west end of town for outside of school use as well.”

The committee anticipates that the playground will be paid off by 2020.

Rosen explained in a previous interview the project spans more than just a playground.

“Part of the playground fundraising efforts is looking at a new basketball court, new soccer goals, and redoing the baseball diamond,” she said.
